Archives and Special Collections

Hours
The College Archives and Special Collections are open a limited number of
hours per week, and hours may vary between semesters.

Monday-Friday, 9:30 am - 4:30 pm
(Closed evenings, weekends and college holidays)
** Anyone wishing to
use these collections is strongly encouraged to call ahead for an appointment,
and to confirm that staff will be available to offer assistance. Arrangements

Location
The Archives and Special Collections are located in the Lower Level of the
library, St. Paul campus.
Staff
Sister Margery Smith, CSJ, is the
College Archivist. She oversees the Archives and Special Collections, as
well as teaching in the MLIS program. Her phone number is (651) 690-6553.
Deborah Kloiber, Reference
Librarian, oversees the Ade Bethune Collection. Her phone number is (651)
690-6599.
College Archives
Located on the Lower Level of the library, the College Archives stores and
preserves documents pertaining to the history of the college. It includes:
administrative and departmental reports; college, student and alumnae publications;
faculty theses, dissertations, books and compositions; and published materials
about faculty and administrators. Also found in the Archives is a large
collection of photographs reflecting campus life, personalities and activities.
Supplementing this is a collection of realia of historical interest,
some of which are also a tangible record of faculty travel. Realia given
or willed to the College from personal collections are incorporated into
the Archives collection.
Access to the Archives and Special Collections is restricted to the College
community and those conducting scholarly research (please see Policy
on Access to and Use of Archives and Special Collections). Those with

Special Collections
Ade Bethune
This is a collection of the papers and art works of the liturgical artist,
Ade Bethune.
Hurley
The Hurley Collection is named as a memorial for
Sister Jeanne d'Arc Hurley, CSJ, a former College of St. Catherine faculty
member. The Hurley sisters, Catherine and Maracella Hurley, gave the collection
to honor their sister. The collection is comprised primarily of miniature
books. It also contains some rare books and books illustrating various
styles of printing.

Antonia McHugh
The Sister Antonia McHugh Collection contains works of literary merit
which have been autographed. Works of local authors and/or authors connected
with the College are emphasized.
Evelyn Goodrow Mitsch
The Evelyn Goodrow Mitsch Collection is a gift of the Mitsch family through
the eldest son, given in memory of the mother of the family. It is a collection
of orientalia, including books and scrapbooks on China and Japan, as well
as examples of Mrs. Mitsch's work as an artist and brush writer.
The collection is housed in two cases, also gifts of the family.
Florence and Alfred Muellerleile
The Florence and Alfred Muellerleile Collection is comprised of books
collected by Mr. Muellerleile, a master printer, publisher, and president
and owner of North Central Publishing. Included are books on printing
and on printers, both old and modern, and a collection of Christmas editions.
Also in the collection are rare and precious Bibles and incunabula.
Ruth Sawyer
This is collection of children's books. It includes a nearly complete
set of Ruth Sawyer's own writings as well as her correspondence.
Charlotte Hill Slade
When Georgiana Slade Reny gave the College her mother's collection of
rare books, it was decided to name the entire collection after her mother,
Charlotte Hill Slade. The Slade Collection contains examples of fine binding,
printing, orientalia, first and limited editions, children's horn books,
and many older works. Also included are gifts from miscellaneous donors,
including art books from Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Niemeyer. A highlight of
the Slade collection is a group of one hundred and thirty-five first editions
of Anthony Trollope's novels, including eleven signed presentation copies.
