Electronic Reference Books

Oxford Reference Online
Here's a great place to find an overview of a subject, or to check a fact. This online, searchable collection of high-quality reference books from Oxford University Press includes titles like The New Oxford American Dictionary, The Oxford Dictionary of American Usage and Style, and The Oxford Companion to Shakespeare. (Sorry--it does not include the Oxford English Dictionary.)

American Writers: A Collection of Literary Biographies (Reference PS 129 .A55)
Encyclopedia contains analytic, interpretive, and biographical essays about American writers and literary figures. Entries include a selective bibliography of published works and critical essays.
British and Irish Authors page
All the way from Japan: an extensive list of links to British and Irish authors from all time periods, arranged chronological-style.
Dictionary of Literary Biography (Reference PS 21. D5)
Hundreds of volumes, each devoted to authors around a particular theme. Entries include critical essays, career chronologies, publication lists, and bibliographies of works by and about the author. Consult the cumulative index in the last volume to locate all entries for an author.
Encyclopedia of Continental Women Writers (Reference PN 481 .E5 1991)
Basic essays and bibliographies for researching continental European women authors of literature from antiquity to the present. Especially useful as a starting point for lesser-known authors.
